AMD64
(computing, usually attributive) The 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set architecture (as opposed to the original 16-bit x86 architecture, or to the 32-bit version of the x86 architecture, also known as IA-32, i386, or x86-32).
The AMD64 version of this Linux distro has higher performance than the i386 version, and doesn't suffer from the severe RAM limits imposed by 32-to-36-bit addressing.

After the demise of Windows on Alpha (and the demise of DEC), Cutler was instrumental in porting Windows to AMD's new 64-bit AMD64 architecture.
Mass-produced x86-64 chips for the general market were available four years later, in 2003, after the time was spent for working prototypes to be tested and refined; about the same time, the initial name x86-64 was changed to AMD64.
It branded its implementation of AMD64 as EM64T, and later re-branded it Intel 64. In its literature and product version names, Microsoft and Sun refer to AMD64/Intel 64 collectively as x64 in the Windows and Solaris operating systems respectively.
As of this writing, the mini.iso for both amd64 and i386 do not include EFI bootable binaries.
It will eventually market this under the name "AMD64".
The AMD64 extensions from AMD (originally called x86-64) added a further eight registers XMM8 through XMM15, and this extension is duplicated in the Intel 64 architecture.
