(linguistics) A phonological process that adds rhotic (R-like) sounds in some dialects of Mandarin Chinese. The suffix usually changes the pronunciation of the syllable
Examples
In Mandarin 今 (jīn) is pronounced /tɕin⁵⁵/
but 今兒/今儿 (jīnr) with the erhua is pronounced /tɕiəɻ⁵⁵/.
