A former rank in the British Indian Army, the lowest rank for a viceroy's commissioned officer.
One famous story is that of Jemadar Lingaraj Urs, of the Mysore Lancers, who died in hand-to-hand combat with Rizkalla Salim, an infamous Bedouin leader, during an attack on the Suez Canal in 1915. Source: Internet
