nakba (plural nakbas)
In Arab contexts: a catastrophe; a grave setback.
Nakba
(Palestine) The fracturing, dispossession and displacement of Palestinian society, following the declaration of Israel on what had been most of Mandatory Palestine, including the flight or expulsion of the majority of the Palestinian Arabs (some 700,000) and the destruction of their homes.
If the Nakba is a tragedy, then the establishment of the State of Israel is a tragedy. The Palestinians experienced a catastrophe that was brought on by their leaders, but the establishment of the State of Israel is not the reason for it. Reuven Rivlin
