Abbreviation of Sequentiel Couleur à Mémoire, meaning “sequential color with memory”, a TV standard.
Basic PAL VCRs work better for this, ones that are more sophisticated detect the SECAM signal as "not-PAL" and refuse to record it in color. Source: Internet
