token ring (plural token rings)
(computing) A network standard invented by IBM and later defined by the 802.5 subcommittee of the IEEE which provides for a network with a star ring topology, and which operates by passing a token frame around the logical ring.
Although FDDI logical topology is a ring-based token network, it did not use the IEEE 802.5 token ring protocol as its basis; instead, its protocol was derived from the IEEE 802.4 token bus timed token protocol. Source: Internet

Deployment FDDI was considered an attractive campus backbone network technology in the early to mid 1990s since existing Ethernet networks only offered 10 Mbit/s data rates and token ring networks only offered 4 Mbit/s or 16 Mbit/s rates. Source: Internet
